The Beach

Escape to a tropical paradise that is Indonesia and get ready for an exclusive tour of Indonesia’s beaches. Surfers are the leaders of today’s undiscovered beaches that then become tomorrow’s ultimate destinations. The lure of “paradise” has brought millions of tourists to Bali and Indonesia over the last few decades.

Surf Magazines

There are surf photographers and there are surf photographers. Then there are “surf photographers” who are “surf photographers” but who
are not really “surf photographers”. These are all-around photographers-persons who love the sea and who love documenting the
slash and burn and majesty and beauty of waves and waveriding, but given a moment’s notice they can also drop their board shorts and
water housings for a while, don a fancy suit or flak jacket if necessary, and speed away to document all sorts of other things in a
decidedly professional way. World-renowned photographer, Australian Jason Childs is of this second and somewhat rare genre. His personal passion is surf photography- travelling the planet documenting waves, surfing, characters and its dreamy locations.

Water and Waves

Photographing the waves and oceans mood swings make it a very unique challenge. You can feel nature’s energy in the waves. Photographing and surfing the majesty of the ocean is freedom, adventure and creativity rolled into one.
It’s an experience. It’s like sex: you can do it over and over, and it is always new and exciting. It’s a spiritual experience.

Surf Archive

Living and working in the world’s no 1 surf playground with its glut of world class surf spots, Bali is the epicentre of Indonesian surfing.

Shooting here has allowed me to work intimately with the best surfers in the world on a daily basis- Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Andy Irons, Rob Machado, Dane Reynolds, Dave Rastovitch and some of the local Bali surfers who have shot to world fame Rizal Tanjung, Made “Bol” Adi Putra to name but a few. To be able to call them friends, not just work associates, or someone I photographed. To be respected as one of the best surf photographers’ in the world where currently I’m one of only four Staff photographers at Surfer Magazine in America regarded as “the Bible” of the Surfing World.

Surf Portraits

Every so often there will be a project that needs some specials portraits. My portraits tell a story, the images must take the viewer to share a part of the subject. My subjects are usually in their most familiar territory, where they feel most comfortable. Some of the best portraits are not set up, they are candid with a feel good vibe.

Christian Fletcher: Bold, Radical, Progressive and Controversial. Depicted full throttle like the individual he is.

Rizal Tanjung : The Ambassador of Surfing In Indonesia.

Kelly Slater: The King, truly Surfing Royalty.

Dave Rastovitch: The Environmental Crusader and all around purveyor of good vibes. Lets, not forget that the guy is a gifted natural surfer.

Rob Machado: Mr Cool- Salute to Gypsies, Drifters and every notion that we have of a Surfer.

Ozzie Wright: Punk, Surf Rock ‘n Roll

Dane Reynolds: The Modern day Hip Surf God, known for his “go for broke” style.

Surf 2013

The waves on the “Island of the Gods” started off with a bang in the first week of January. Javanese surfer Dede Suryana tasting Mushroom Rock, Bali based South African expat Harald Steinmann scoring gold and Bali’s Marlon Gerber riding the wave of the wet season under the eyes of the Gods.

Then off to Sumbawa with Aussies Mick Fanning on a mission for Red Bull to Lakey Peak, Sumbawa, joining him was, two of the hottest young Aussie groms — Mikey Wright and Luke Hynd. Mick was at his technical best, Luke blowing tail in the golden hour and wild man Matt Wilkinson taming the waves.

June saw the WCT circus roll into town for The Oakley Pro Bali, Event No. 5 of 10 on the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour (WCT). This was an historic high-performance showdown including perfect heats and next level progression from the world’s best surfers, culminating with Parkinson’s hard-fought victory over Bourez in the Final but the highlight was my unquie images of John John Florence’s outrageous, biggest-ever-seen offering in surfing contest history during round one of the Oakley Pro, Keramas.

I captured from the water an iconic image used by Hurley for worldwide useage. Aussie pros Josh Kerr ruling the airwaves in Bali and heir to the thrown Hawaii’s John John Florence taking airs it to the next level.

King Kelly Slater slaying the mythical beast on Bali’s eastcoast and hanging with the locals boys Marlon Gerber and Rizal Tanjung. Long live the king! Aussie Taj Burrows taking flight over Airport Reef, Bali

Local boy Mega Semadhi finding redemption at Padang Padang and claiming his first Rip Curl Cup in pumping barrels in the RipCurl Cup Padang Padang 10th year. American Chris Ward, a Bali regular and runner up in the 2008 WCT RipCurl Cup blazing again in 2013. Aussie grom Robinson running like a rabbit down a hole at Padang Padang.

September hit the road with Dane Reynolds the stealth shark in the water before he busted his hand and ended his trip on the last wave of the 1st day in the resort at Maccas in the Mentawais. With Dane were Andrew Doheny and Nat Young who tore up everything in his way in 2013 freesurfing or on the WCT circus.

Then some late season as good as it gets Padang Padang, the Bukit Peninsula, Bali offshore, 6 feet and Bintangs at sunset to finish of the dry season.

Sumba Foundation Book

As, Chief Photographer for The Sumba Foundation Book, I produced a collection of raw images depicting the rich history and culture of Sumba. There is nowhere I’ve experienced like Sumba in the world. The landscape is breathtaking and the indigenous culture is alive. This place is one of very few places that really does exceed as a perfect destination.

The traditional ceremonies performed by people of Sumba adhere to the original religion called Marapu. The Pasola, a Spear Battle by horsemen warrior is one of the most incredible traditional festivals in Sumba. Pasola is ‘at war’ conducted by two groups of riding horsemen.

Theses images transport you to another place and time to experience the fascinating culture and dramatic scenery of Sumba through my lens. I want to thank the Nihiwatu Resort for its support of the Sumba community and the Sumba Foundation who work together to positively impact the lives of the Sumbanese.
